New Toyota launched in Germany

Toyota became the third team to unveil their 2008 challenger on Thursday, at their German base in Cologne. After enduring a tough 2007, the Japanese team hope that the TF108 will help them revitalise their fortunes in what will be their seventh Formula One season.

“Of course, our ultimate target is the middle step of the podium - we are in Formula One to win and we want to do that soon," said Toyota team principal Tadashi Yamashina. "Our clear target in 2008 is to make a big improvement in our results because we were not satisfied with our performance last year. We expect to have a truly competitive car so our drivers should be aiming to finish in the points regularly and challenging for the podium.”

Incumbent driver Jarno Trulli was present at the launch, alongside new team mate Timo Glock and third driver Kamui Kobayashi. Other members of the squad’s management were also in attendance, including team president John Howett and the brains behind the design, Luca Marmorini, Toyota’s senior general manager (engine) and his chassis counterpart, Pascal Vasselon.

The team finished their disappointing 2007 campaign sixth in the standings, with 13 world championship points.

In politics much is made of so-called ‘momentum’. Ferrari have it in abundance. The team came from behind to take both championships and finished the last race of the season with what looked like an ultra-dominant car. In pre-season testing, the F2008 has been looking super quick with Kimi Raikkonen seemingly relishing the loss of traction control. There is no one better to lead the 2008 charge than the Iceman and any threat from Massa has been diminished by Jean Todt’s decision to step aside for new Team Principle Stefano Domenicali.

Formula 1 - sezona 2007/08 F2008

McLaren

Car: MP4-23
Engine: Mercedes F0108V
Drivers: Lewis Hamilton; Heikki Kovalainen
Testers: Pedro de la Rosa; Gary Paffett

Lewis Hamilton’s debut was a double edged sword for McLaren; the rookie was quick, too quick and this ultimately led to a major split between himself and rival Alonso.

The divisions in the team were made worse after McLaren were kicked out of the constructors’ championship for receiving and disseminating intellectual property from Ferrari. In terms of raw performance though the MP4-22 was just as competitive as the Ferrari and all the signs from testing are that the MP4-23 is quick enough to take the fight to Ferrari.

Hamilton is perfectly capable of leading the team and Kovalainen is fast enough to push the Briton but quiet and likeable enough not to disrupt the team if and when things don’t go his way.

Resources are an issue given the $100m fine the team received for their involvement in the spy scandal as well as the logistical problems that come with being based further down the pitlane.

BMW Sauber

BMW were very much best of the rest last year but will be hard-pressed to hold on to this accolade in 2008. The Hinwil-based outfit, like Honda and Red Bull, elected to cease development of their 2007 challenger early and pool their resources into this year’s car. The approach was a radical one and the word on the grapevine is that the F1.08 is somewhat unpredictable and unstable under braking. Nonetheless the team have one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid and have the manufacture support to challenge for podiums.

Williams

Testers: Nico Hulkenberg

Williams, who will be celebrating their 30th anniversary in F1 this year, have been the surprise package of winter testing. The Grove-based outfit finished last year on a high when Nico Rosberg powered his way to a career best fourth place after starting tenth. This momentum has been carried into testing where both Rosberg and Nakajima have been lighting up the time sheets. Rosberg is a future champion in the making and Williams have done well to hold on to him. However one has to question if the Toyota-backed Nakajima is really in the second seat on merit. As an independent constructor there is also the issue of investment and whether or not the team can take the fight to the manufacturers with only a third of the budget. Nevertheless, all the talk is that Williams are in for a return to the sharp end of the grid in 2008.

Renault

The prodigal son returns to something of a broken home. Renault had a dismal 2007 battling it out in the mid-field with an extremely unstable car after two years of championship glory. If the rumours are true that Flavio Briatore was in talks with Alonso as early as the first race of the season then the team’s failure to turn things around could be due to the team pumping all their efforts into 2008. The R28 has yet to impress in pre-season testing but the Alonso factor should be enough to bring the team to the front of the mid-field pack.

Red Bull Racing

Car: RB4
Engine: Renault RS27
Drivers: David Coulthard; Mark Webber
Testers: Lucas di Grassi; Romain Grosjean

With two experienced drivers at the helm and the Newey-Willis partnership working hard behind the scenes, Red Bull Racing are increasingly looking like an F1 team proper despite the somewhat excessive and flamboyant image inherent in the Red Bull brand.

2007 was plagued by reliability problems due to Newey’s quick but altogether unreliable and unstable RB3. The new RB4 has shown flashes of brilliance in testing attracting a lot of attention with it’s radical new rear ‘fin’. If new car is reliable – and all the signs in testing are that it is - then Red Bull will be right up there.

Force India

Engine: Ferrari 056
Drivers: Adrian Sutil; Giancarlo Fisichella
Testers: Vitantonio Liuzzi

Vijay Mallya brings a much needed injection of enthusiasm and cash into the former Spyker, Midland and Jordan team. Mike Gascoyne heads up an expanding technical team and the VJM01 hasn’t been looking to shabby in testing either. Adrian Sutil impressed last year though doubts hang over the motivation of Giancarlo Fisichella. That said it might be the opportunity the Italian has been looking for to reinvent himself after struggling to compete with the likes of Fernando Alonso.

Torro Rosso

Drivers: Sebastien Bourdais; Sebastian Vettel

Torro Rosso could be in for a rough ride in the early part of the season as the team are set to start with last year’s drastically unreliable RB3. With the new requirement for gearboxes to last four races, Red Bull’s sister team could find themselves suffering from exactly the same problems that Mark Webber and David Coulthard had last year. The team don’t exactly have a fantastic base to build on in 2007, though there were glimpses of potential, most notably China where Vettel finished a career best fourth place. And oh what might have been had Vettel not taken out Mark Webber at the rain-soaked Japanese Grand Prix. The ‘two Sebs’ driver pairing is another strong partnership with the prospect of a seat at Red Bull for ‘09 acting as a key motivation for success.

Toyota

With one of the biggest budgets in the sport, Toyota have drastically underperformed in the few years that they have been in the sport. However, Jarno Trulli is convinced that the Cologne-based outfit will surprise its competitors in 2008. The new car has some promise in testing but the real test will be how the new TF108 fares up against the Toyota backed Williams.

The Trulli-Glock partnership isn’t exactly the strongest driver-line up in paddock. Trulli has slipped into something of a comfort zone at Toyota seemingly content to battle it out in the mid-field. One wonders if Glock is the right man to push the Italian and drive competitive progression in the team.

Honda

Testers: Alex Wurz; Mike Conway; Luca Filippi

Best not mention 2007. It was a diabolical year for the Anglo-Japanese team; the worst in Honda’s modern history. The RA107 was dogged by aerodynamic instability and outshone by its 2006 predecessor in the hands of Super Aguri. The arrival of former Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn to the struggling Brackley based team, along with a series of other high profile appointments, illustrates Honda’s new found commitment to long term capacity building as well as continuing to throw money at research and development. With patience the team could return to the sharp end but it won’t happen this year. The RA108 has not shown to be a major improvement in testing though we have yet to fully see the impact of a new aerodynamic package that the team tried out last week. Jenson Button still has what it takes to win in Formula One and the arrival of Brawn can only be a good thing for Rubens.

Super Aguri

Everybody loves an underdog especially when it punches above it’s weight. And boy did Super Aguri do that last year. The team delivered far beyond expectations with Sato and Davidson getting the car into Q3 on a few occassions as well as bringing home some points. Then there was that move on Alonso.

How quickly things can turn in F1. The Honda-backed team have been forced to miss almost all of the pre-season test sessions due to financial problems and less assistance from Honda. The team are at least in Melbourne with reports that the team’s freight began arriving today. But a serious question mark looms over their continuation in F1.

Australian Grand Prix - Lap by Lap Race Report

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton will start the today’s Australian Grand Prix from pole position. The 2007 World Championship runner-up will join BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica on the front-row with new team-mate, Heikki Kovalainen back in third.

The Australian Grand Prix around the 5.3km Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, Victoria, marks the start of the 2008 Championship. The 58-lap race will take place in dry conditions, with track temperature around fifty one degrees, thirteen degrees hotter than during qualifying – as is air temperature of thirty seven.

After problems with fuel pressurisation during qualifying, current World Champion Raikkonen will start from fifteenth. Timo Glock of Toyota has taken a ten place drop for a gearbox change, and for blocking Webber during qualifying. Adrian Sutil of the new Force India team will start from the pits after an engine and chassis change. Home boy Mark Webber starts from fourteenth after a spin during qualifying.

The start should be electric, with drivers starting without traction control – those on the left side of the grid, the cleaner line, may have an advantage.

Massa, Raikkonen and Glock will start the race on the softer tyres – this may give them an advantage off the line. Hamilton backs the pack right up ahead of the start, so his car doesn’t have to sit in the awesome Melbourne heat for any longer than it has to.

Lap 1 – 58 remaining – Raikkonen goes from fifteenth to eighth during the first lap. A number of cars make contact at the start. Vettel, Button and Fisichella retire after a first corner smash, Massa drops it out of turn one and hits the barrier. Davidson is squashed by Webber, both retire. Button and Webber get back to the pits. Ferrari change the front wing of Massa’s car and he rejoins.

56 remaining – Safety car pulls in. Hamilton holds position. Massa refuels.

54 remaining – Raikkonen 10.7 seconds behind the leaders, now stuck behind Barrichello in the Honda. Hamilton leads Kubica by 2.6 seconds. Kovalainen leads Rosberg in third, 2.5 seconds behind the BMW Sauber. Massa is running last.

50 remaining – Raikkonen closes down Barrichello, but is now twenty seconds behind Lewis Hamilton. Kovalainen is catching Kubica. Nakajima passes Piquet for position.

48 remaining – Sutil is pushed into his pit garage. Top eight include, Hamilton, Kubica, Kovalainen, Rosberg, Heidfeld, Trulli, Barrichello and Raikkonen.

47 remaining – Sutil retires.

44 remaining – Hamilton leads Kubica by over ten seconds.

43 remaining – BMW Sauber mechanics are out in the pit-lane. Kubica pits and takes on the harder compound tyre. He rejoins behind Raikkonen and Barrichello. Raikkonen continues to hassle the Brazilian. Massa passes Nakajima.

40 remaining – Hamilton pits and also takes on the harder compound tyres. He rejoins in fourth behind Heidfeld. Raikkonen finally passes Barrichello for sixth. He is now fifteen seconds behind Hamilton following his stop.

38 remaining – Trulli retires meanwhile Massa passes Sato for twelfth.

37 remaining – Rosberg and Heidfeld pit. Heidfeld gets ahead, and Rosberg is also passed by Coulthard and Alonso when they join the track.

36 remaining – Kovalainen pits and rejoins just ahead of Raikkonen. Raikkonen was beginning to reign in Hamilton.

35 remaining – Barrichello and Coulthard pit together.

33 remaining – Massa puts his car up the inside of Coulthard and launches the Scott into the air. Safety car deployed. Raikkonen looks to enter the pit, but decides against it as the pits are closed.

30 remaining – Drivers may now pit and lapped drivers may pass the safety car. Alonso pits along with Kubica – Alonso was almost out of fuel. Raikkonen does not pit.

29 remaining – Safety car comes in. Raikkonen slips behind Kovalainen and outbrakes himself into turn three. Kimi drops to last after returning from the gravel trap. Massa retires to the side of the racetrack.

28 remaining – Raikkonen pits. Piquet retires.

27 remaining – Sato retires. Eleven cars remain.

26 remaining – Alonso starts to hassle Kubica, who is four seconds slower than Hamilton.

18 remaining – Hamilton loses half a second to Kovalainen, but continues to lead. Raikkonen catches the pack again after his pit stop and off-track excursion.

16 remaining – Heidfeld closes down Kovalainen for second, currently 1.7 seconds behind. Raikkonen gets a tyre onto the grass at turn three and spins as he continues to try and pass Glock.

14 remaining – Heidfeld pits and Kovalainen sets the fastest lap of the race. Glock crashes hard in tenth and the safety car is deployed.

13 remaining – Barrichello pulls over the refuelling mechanic after the lollipop man makes an error and releases the Honda too early. It is questionable whether Barrichello should have been in the pits under a safety car anyway. However, it appears that the Honda was almost empty – so it was a case of either run out of fuel or take a penalty.

12 remaining – Ten cars remain. Kovalainen and Alonso pit. Raikkonen is now in eighth.

11 remaining – Safety car comes in. Nakajima and Kubica pit, both change front wings. Kubica retires.

9 remaining – Raikkonen falls back from sixth to eighth. Barrichello takes his penalty. Raikkonen lost the positions as Kovalainen passed him, also allowing Alonso to overtake.

7 remaining – Raikkonen is slowing, six seconds slower last lap and the engine sounds rough. Current positions are Hamilton, Heidfeld, Rosberg, Bourdais, Alonso, Kovalainen, Raikkonen, Barrichello and Nakajima.

4 remaining – Kovalainen fights with Alonso over fifth. Raikkonen retires at the end of the pit lane.

3 remaining – Bourdais retires from fourth in his Toro Rosso with engine failure.

1 remaining – Kovalainen passes Alonso, but loses drive out of the corner only for Fernando to retake the position.

Finish Lewis Hamilton wins his fifth victory, the first for McLaren in Australia since 2003. Heidfeld finishes second, Rosberg takes his first podium in third, Alonso fourth and Kovalainen fifth. Barrichello and Nakajima finish sixth and seventh. Bourdais takes the last place despite retiring from the race.

However, Barrichello is likely to be disqualified after leaving the pits under the red light. This will elevate Nakajima to sixth, Bourdais seventh and Raikkonen eighth.

Nakajima je takodje kaznjen. On nije diskvalifikovan kao Barichello. Koliko sam razumeo imao je neopravdani incident sa Kubicom. Kaznjen je sa 10 mesta manje od pozicije za koju se izbori na treningu u Maleziji.

Sve su to vrhunski vozaci... skinuo sam s neta snimak Australije i mogu vam reci da sam detaljnom analizom utvrdio da :
onaj Kovalainen i nije za Mclaren. Mislim da mu je to bio preran skok i da on nikako nije talenat kao glupi Hamilton. Muke koje mu je zadao pri kraju Alonso sa slabasnim Renoom su neprimerene.

Barichello je svakako iznenadio kao i njegov Hondin bolid. Da se nije izmajmunisao uletanjem preko crvenog svetla imao bi odlican plasman. Valjda nam ova trka govori o boljim danima za Hondu. Njegov kolega je neprimetno ispao sa trke tako da bi Button tek trebalo da se pokaze jel.

Ferari se kolektivno izbrukao. Raikkonen je zahvaljujuci diskvalifikaciji Barichella sramno uzeo jedan jedini bod za tim.

Villiams je iznenadio... i Rosberg i Nakajima su uzeli bodove, i ekipa im je izbila odmah na drugo mesto konstruktora.

BMW je bio fenomenalan. Drugo mesto za Heidfelda .. i Kubica bi dobro prosao da ga glupi Nakajima nije zakacio pa je posle Kubica ostao u boksu i nije zavrsio trku. ALi nema veze bice dana. Po meni je BMW najinteresantniji i najbolji tim F1 trenutno.

Ostali timovi su bili nistavni. Jedino se izdvojio Burdes ili kako se vec zove taj Francuz koji je uzeo koji bod za Torro Rosso. :)

Petronas, of course, was already a partner of Sauber when I was driving for them from 2001 to 2003, and we used to do promotional tours around the country. As a Formula One driver you usually don't get to see much beyond airports, hotels and race tracks as there simply isn't the time to get to know a country and its people. (Bas mi ga zao ! sad )But in Malaysia I've already managed to get around quite a bit and I feel very much at home there. It always takes a while to get acclimatized to the combination of heat and high humidity, but that's never been a problem for me. The circuit is an attractive and challenging one. Last year I had a great race in Sepang and finished fourth. I managed to get past Felipe Massa and kept the Ferrari in check behind me.”

“I'm looking forward to the race in Malaysia because Sepang is a very challenging track which I'm fond of. Of course the climatic conditions are at the extreme end, which makes it even more of a challenge. But fortunately we already had very high temperatures in Melbourne, so we've had a bit of a chance to adjust. Last year our car was very competitive, but for me pretty much everything went wrong. So I still have a score to settle in Sepang. The Malaysian Grand Prix is a very special race for us on account of our partner Petronas. We have a lot of fans rooting for us there.”
